Commercial Roof Care in Winter

This time of year, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with everything you need to get done. There’s a lot of rushing around in our personal lives and in our professional lives. Not only do we have to spend more time considering how to navigate more unpredictable weather, but most of us have a long list of events, gatherings, and chore lists we must contend with as the season transitions into Spring. That’s why we at ABR Construction are here to help ease your mind about at least one thing—the care of the roof of your commercial building!

During the colder months, we tend to turn our thoughts to the indoors. Lawns stop growing, leaves are all raked, and everything is dormant—but this is not really the best idea. As anyone who has driven on a road in winter or early Spring can attest, this is the season that does the most damage on our infrastructure as well.

While it’s probably safe to assume that salt won’t be the same danger for your roof as it will be for the roads, your car, and even your shoes, the other sources of seasonal damage are potentially even more damaging. The same cycle of freezing and thawing that tends to tear big holes in our roads also impacts our roofs, causing them to become more fragile and possibly warp and crack over time. A particularly variable winter could do as much damage in a season as several years of normal use on a roof.

Snow can pile up on the roof, and, being elevated above the ground with cool air under it, moisture has a way of lingering longer than you’d expect. That weight over extended periods of time can cause sagging and increase the potential for possible leaks. If your gutters are clogged from the autumn leaves, you might end up with pooling water, which also contributes to cracks and leaks, which can also lead to huge repair bills and the loss of product.

So how do you prevent it? And what’s the best way to stay on top of your roof care when you’ve got so many other things you need to worry about during the winter and early Spring?
